Swim Meet 101

Swim Meet Tips!

Swim Meets

Swim meets are several hours long, so here are some pro tips!

  • Bring water, towel, goggles, swim cap, and healthy snacks
  • See pictures below for tips on remembering your events!
  • Swimmers - Check in with your coach upon arrival
  • Volunteers - check in with a SYC Board Member upon arrival
  • Parents - viewing areas tend to get crowded, so come early and bring a lawn chair

Prep Meets

Prep meets are optional but FUN! These events are much shorter than swim meets (usually lasting about an hour or less). We have coaches in the water to help your swimmer get across the pool and ensure safety for all swim abilities.

Tips for Remembering your Events at Swim Meets:

To help your swimmer stay organized during a meet, we suggest writing their event details directly on their forearm or hand using a dark permanent marker. This makes it easy for them to keep track of their events, heats, and lanes throughout the meet.

Here’s one way to do it:

  1. Refer to the heat sheet for your swimmer’s events.
  2. Use a marker to draw a simple table with the headers:
    E = Event, H = Heat, L = Lane
  3. Fill in the corresponding numbers for each event, along with the stroke and distance.
  4. For relays, you can note which leg your swimmer is swimming (e.g., “100 Free Relay – #2”).
  5. Write the info on your swimmer’s arm before applying sunscreen and allow it to dry completely.

Example:
If your swimmer is in Event 6 (50 Freestyle), Heat 4, Lane 4, the entry would look like:
E: 6 | H: 4 | L: 4 | 50 Free

This simple method helps swimmers feel confident and stay on track during busy meet days!
